March Monthly Challenge: Half Square Triangles (HSTs) 💚

March is the month of fresh starts, crisp mornings, and just a hint of creative chaos — which makes it the perfect time to dive into one of quilting’s most versatile (and slightly addictive) building blocks:

Half Square Triangles!

Whether you’re a seasoned quilter who can trim HSTs in your sleep or someone who still triple-checks which way the diagonal should go (no judgment!), this month’s challenge is all about celebrating the magic of this simple unit.

Why Half Square Triangles?

Half Square Triangles — lovingly known as HSTs — are the chameleons of the quilting world. With just two triangles sewn together, you can create:

• Bold modern geometric layouts

• Classic pinwheels

• Chevron patterns

• Stars

• Zigzags

• Endless secondary designs

It’s amazing how something so simple can create so much movement and dimension.

Plus… let’s be honest. There’s something deeply satisfying about trimming a perfectly pressed HST.

This Month’s Challenge

Your mission (should you choose to accept it):

✨ Create a project using at least 20 Half Square Triangles
✨ Any size. Any color palette. Any pattern.
✨ Modern, traditional, scrappy, monochrome — it’s all fair game!

You can make:

• A mini quilt

• A pillow cover

• A table runner

• A full quilt top

• A wall hanging

• Or even just a striking HST sampler block

This challenge is about playing with layout and contrast. Try rotating your HSTs in different directions and watch how the design transforms. Sometimes the magic happens after the third (or tenth!) layout adjustment.

Our February Kick Off starts Monday Mar 2, at 2:00 PM MST. 

Throughout March, we’ll also be hosting more live streams where we’ll:

• Demonstrate Flying Geese construction methods

• Share tips for accuracy and trimming
