November Challenge: Piece It Together! ๐Ÿงตโœ‚๏ธ

This November, we're putting a new spin on piecing things together!

Quilters, it's time to grab your fabric, gather your favorite tools, and get ready for a challenge that's all about paper piecing! Whether you're a fan of the precision of Foundation Paper Piecing or love the slow, satisfying process of English Paper Piecing, this month is your chance to give these techniques a try, show off your skills, and maybe even discover a new favorite way to quilt.

And don't worry if paper piecing is new to you! This challenge is all about having fun, learning something new, and celebrating the creativity that makes our quilting community so special. ๐Ÿ’•

โœ‚๏ธ Two Techniques, One Fun Challenge!

Did you know there are two popular types of paper piecing? They both use paper to help create beautiful quilt blocks, but they work in very different ways!

๐Ÿ“ Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP)

For the quilter who loves precision!

Foundation Paper Piecing uses a printed paper pattern as a guide for sewing fabric pieces together. Fabric is stitched directly onto the paper foundation, helping you achieve crisp points, sharp angles, and intricate designs that might otherwise make you want to hide your rotary cutter!

FPP is perfect for creating detailed geometric blocks, tiny stars, animals, landscapes, and those wonderfully complicated designs that make everyone ask, "How did you DO that?"

Project ideas to try:

  • A beautiful star block with perfectly sharp points

  • A colorful geometric mini quilt

  • A seasonal block featuring pumpkins, leaves, or winter designs

  • A tiny quilt block that makes a great ornament or wall hanging

Quilter tip: A shorter stitch length can make removing the paper easier once your seams are sewn. And remember to check your fabric placement before stitching. Nobody wants to discover their favorite print is upside down after they've sewn the whole thing together!

๐Ÿชก English Paper Piecing (EPP)

For the quilter who likes to take the scenic route!

English Paper Piecing uses paper templates to shape individual pieces of fabric. The fabric edges are wrapped around the templates, then the pieces are hand-stitched together. The paper is removed after the shapes are securely joined.

This technique is especially popular for hexagons, diamonds, and other shapes that create stunning designs when joined together. It's also a wonderful portable project for road trips, waiting rooms, cozy evenings, or sneaking in a little quilting time wherever life takes you.

Project ideas to try:

  • A classic hexagon flower

  • A colorful mug rug or table topper

  • A scrappy mini quilt made from your favorite fabric leftovers

  • A portable EPP project you can work on a few stitches at a time

Quilter tip: Keep a little EPP kit ready to go with your templates, fabric pieces, needle, thread, and scissors. You never know when you'll find yourself with a few spare minutes and a chance to sneak in some stitching!

๐Ÿค” Which Paper Piecing Personality Are You?

Are you Team FPP, carefully following a pattern to create precise points and intricate designs? Or are you Team EPP, happily hand-stitching tiny fabric shapes one at a time?

Maybe you're a little bit of both!

  • Team FPP: You love precision, geometric designs, and the satisfaction of perfect points.

  • Team EPP: You enjoy hand stitching, portable projects, and the relaxing rhythm of sewing one little piece at a time.

  • Team Both: Why choose when you can have the best of both worlds?

There's no wrong answer here. We believe the best quilting technique is the one that makes you excited to create!

๐Ÿ’ก Let Your CutterPillar Tools Help!

No matter which paper piecing method you choose, having the right tools can make your project easier and more enjoyable.

  • Your CutterPillar Light Board: Illuminate your pattern to help with tracing, fabric placement, and seeing those important pattern lines.

  • Your Cutting Mat: Keep your workspace organized and give yourself a reliable surface for trimming fabric pieces and preparing templates.

  • Your Favorite Cutting Tools: Accurate cutting helps you start with pieces that fit your pattern and makes piecing less frustrating.

A little preparation can go a long way toward making your next project a success!
