Some of the best quilting stories start with a gift nobody asked for. For Kristen Danis, it was a basic Singer Simple sewing machine under the Christmas tree, one she didn't even know she wanted. Sixteen years later, it's turned into a career built on turning cherished memories into keepsakes, and she's bringing that craft to The Handmade Collective this September.
Who Is Kristen Danis?
Kristen is the maker behind KD Quilts, based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She started KD Quilts 16 years ago as a way to document her own creative journey while taking her quilting skills to the next level.
Her sewing story actually started back in high school home economics class, where she made a pillow and a pair of shorts. After graduation she stepped away from sewing for years, pursuing a teaching career before leaving the classroom after her oldest son was born. That's when the sewing machine showed up as a gift, and everything changed. Growing up around sewing, Kristen had always loved fabric and pattern, and once she had that little machine in hand, she started collecting Anna Maria and Tula prints simply because she loved them, no project in mind, just a fat quarter stash that kept growing. Combine a love of cozy things with a beautiful fabric collection, and quilting was the natural next step.
Over the past 16 years, Kristen has contributed to books, magazines, and blog tours, released several independent patterns, and created countless tutorials. After taking time to focus on her family, she's back full-time, continuing her signature memory quilt work while creating new tutorials and patterns for the community.
What Is a Memory Quilt?
A memory quilt takes clothing that already means something, t-shirts from a season of life, a loved one's closet, a milestone wardrobe, and turns it into a quilt built to be used and kept for generations. Instead of buying new fabric, you're working with pieces that already carry the memory, which makes the technique as much about thoughtful piecing and layout as it is about sewing. Kristen specializes in this using a classic mosaic style, one that lets each fabric piece keep its story while still coming together into a cohesive design.
